When the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads collaborated to build a railroad line from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the completion was a monumental, six-year feat that demanded a celebration. On May 10, 1869, a 17.6-carat golden spike was driven to join the rails at Promontory Summit in Utah Territory. This spike was engraved with the names of some of the VIPs who made the transcontinental railroad a reality and inscribed with this saying: “May God continue the unity of our Country as this Railroad unites the two great Oceans of the world.” To honor this accomplishment, we present our Golden Spike 1-oz silver bullion coin with 24-karat plated gold. Engraved with the words “from sea to shining sea,” it’s a beautiful reminder of the power of human ingenuity and cooperation.
