Apparently, before Iowa was even a state, it got its nickname in 1838 after The Iowa Patriot newspaper changed its name to the The Hawk-Eye and Iowa Patriot as a tribute to Native American chief Black Hawk and those who fought in the Black Hawk War of 1832.
