Twenty-three year old prodigy, Gian Lorenzo Bernini completed this sculpture, entitled 'The Rape of Proserpina', in 1622. The imagery is of the moment Pluto captured the daughter of Ceres and Jupiter and dragged her to the Underworld. Ceres mourned her daughter’s loss by ending the plentiful harvest for a freezing winter until Proserpina’s return in the spring. Bernini's skillful work earned this piece a place in this five part series which celebrates "Eternal Sculptures".
