In 1961, John F. Kennedy became President of the U.S. during a bleak part of the Space Race. America was falling further behind the Soviet Union and as Yugi Gagarin became the first man to orbit Earth, hope was dwindling that we’d be able to catch up. Kennedy didn’t see it that way. As seen here on this Miles Standish-designed, 7k-exclusive ‘An American Life' coin, in September of 1962, he delivered a speech to the students of Houston’s Rice University and declared that before the 1960s ended, we would put a man on the moon and then bring him home safely again. And we did.
